A brief Excursion in the Hotel’s vicinity

With our friend Dogan, Proprietor of the Marina as well as the Hotel Palmiye, we have planned a brief excursion in the vicinity of the hotel.
For hotel guests, as well as for our sailing companions, this is a chance to get to know the neighbourhood of Orhaniye much better.

The Hotel’s transfer buses are working to full capacity only during the weekends, e.g. Saturday, Sunday, Monday; thus on Friday, after your sailing trip, you can enjoy the interesting rural life and the mountainous region at the coast with Dogan or with one of his drivers.

Start the tour in Orhaniye

Your trip with two and up to eight persons start in Orhaniye at the Hotel Palmiye, the berth of the SY-MAGELLAN. From there the route takes you onto the Bozburun Peninsula to Turgut, a typical small village at the coast.

Here you get an impression of the village life, see old (and new) village dwellings, learn some news about the production of honey, and outside of prayer times you can visit the village’s Mosque.

Of course, you can take photos – and in case the Hoca, the Islamic Clericalist/Teacher is present, you can discuss with him football and Istanbul-Fenerbahce.

The excursion continues along the villagers‘ fields and gardens over small roads and alleys. Behind the village you see the ruins of Doric Royal Tombs from around 600 B.C. A small path leads up to the ruins. And soon you arrive at the waterfall that will not run dry even during the hot summer months. Here you will also meet tourists from Marmaris making a stopover with their jeeps.

Trouts swim in the small stream: They can be prepared in the nearby restaurant. If you like, you can enjoy the freshly prepared trouts while the driver will have a rest.

Walking through a cool shady valley with an ancient tree population it will ony be a few meters to the waterfall. There in the small „pool“ below the waterfall you can take a refreshing bath in a (very) cold water.
By the wayside you will see a tree that is over 800 years of age, and on ist surface numerous white ribbons are attached. Each ribbon stands for a wish that shall be satisfied. You can look inside the tree, it is hollow. And when you climb into this small hole, then looking upwards, at the very top you can see „a little piece of Heaven“. (Don’t forget your white ribbon).

Close to the tree there is an ancient watermill that can be visited. Here you also have the opportunity for a small break with Chay, the Turkish national drink, or another refreshment. You can inspect the interior of the small mill.

Another attraction is the visit of a very interesting rural carpet manufacture. Actually, it is rather a museum with lovingly furbished rooms and descriptive exhibitions.

The Origination of a Carpet

If you like – and only if you like, you can hear and see a lot about the origination of a carpet. The German speaking guide will adapt his information to your conception of time to be spent.

You will get information on silk, wool and cotton, on the difference of natural wool and wool dyed with natural products. You will learn how to differenciate the quality (and the price) of carpets and to evaluate those yourselves.

Of course, you will also see how the women of the village knot a great variety of carpets, and the guide will exemplify the different qualities and knotting methods.

Did you ever hold the cocoon of a silkworm in your hand, or do you know the length of the single thread of such a cocoon?
At the premises of the rural carpet manufacture the preparation of silk is vividly depicted, and you can watch the Silkmaster working, while the individual steps of his work are explained to you.

A visit to the Carpet Cooperative is a very interesting „tessera“ of the excursion. For us, it was exciting and impressive! Our view of the traditionally knotted carpets has changed. The Cooperative should by no means be compared with many carpet dealers in the bazaar who would also sell you „The Flying Carpet“.

You decide the length of the tour. You should calculate with approx. one to two hours, and they will really fly by. If you want to gather lots of information, then your tour might take even longer.

By the way: in Turkey you will find the oldest carpet of the world, the largest carpet of the world, and the carpet with the most knots (worldwide).
If we are not busy, we always love to accompany you to places in the vicinity of our second home, the small village of Orhaniye in die Hisarönü Gulf.
Tours are made as agreed and subject to availability of the vehicles. Subject to modifications.
